By BARRISTER SIKIRU OLANREWAJU ADEWOYE
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Barrister Sikiru Olanrewaju Adewoye’s resolve to come out “holding brief” for a segment of God’s own creatures – the lower animals is an overflowing of his love for harmonious environment shared by the higher and the lower animals.
The book has its roots from the impressionable years of this Solicitor and Advocate. When he started showing interests in animals, he was always in the habit of tending his paternal grandmother’s poultry and would not allow anybody to have access to the cage until he had fed the birds.
Later, whenever he had any butterfly flying around the compound, he would get hold of it gently and looked at it critically and would not allow anybody to endanger the butterfly’s life. The butterfly would be released by him.
His love for animals, birds, flies and insects did not diminish as he went through primary and secondary education. With this development, it was the consensus of opinion that he would, probably, settle for animal-related sciences like Veterinary Medicine or Zoology.
To the surprise of everybody, when he eventually gained admission into the erstwhile University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, he settled for Law. Everybody heaved a sigh of relief that at last, he would leave the animals and their world alone.
The author started his academic career from the Ahmadiyya Primary School, Idikan, Ibadan 1975 – 1981 from where he had admission into Oke Ado High School 1981 – 1986.
He was at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, between 1990 – 1997 for his Bachelor of Law (LLB) and the Nigerian law School, Abuja, 1998 – 1999 when he had his Barrister at Law (BL), and the call to the Nigerian Bar.
Still much in the clamour for excellence, had his Masters Degree in Law from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife 2002. He is on the verge of completing his Masters of Philosophy in Law in the same University.
Married happily with two kids, Barrister Adewoye is a man with multi-dimensional aptitudes and competence as exemplified by his involvement in several litigations as counsel and many extra-curriculum activities.
His leadership traits started in the Primary School when he was made the Labour Prefect and Class Prefect at Oke Ado High School.
At OAU, he was elected Secretary-General of EQUITY CHAMBERS, Faculty of Law, OAU, Ife, 1994/1995. Assistant Secretary-General, Ila-Orangun Students’ Association, OAU Chapter, Ile-Ife 1995/1997. He was also elected the Director, Academic and Welfare Committee, Equity Chambers, Faculty of Law, OAU, Ile-Ife, 1995/1996, and a member of Sports Committee, Law Students Society, OAU, Ife-Ife, 1995/1996.
He served as a member of the Sports Committee, Nigerian bar Association, Ibadan branch from 2004 – 2007.
Apart from his professional and extra-curriculum engagements, he has many published works to his credit.
These publications, among others are:
(1) A critical appraisal of Animal Rights in Nigeria;
(2) Legal Framework for Game Management for Renewable energy under Nigerian and International Law;
(3) Liability for Environmental Pollution in Nigeria;
(4) Legal sanction for the abuse of flora and fauna in Nigeria.
This 40 year-old Attorney born in Ibadan and into the family of Elemona, Ila-Orangun, enjoys Animal Husbandry, Dog-breeding and Game-watching as his hobbies. Cheerful, out-going, vivacious, though, sober, reflective, calm, calculating but strict and firm in decision-making.
The author’s proficiency in and love for Yoruba language is unrivalled hence his resolve to translate this great book into Yoruba as his token of contribution to remedial measures for the unfortunate trend in the recent dearth of Yoruba literature.
Comrade ‘Dupe Adewoye.
