THE BOOK-ANIMAL RIGHTS IN NIGERIA-COMMENTS BY PRINCE LATEEF O. FAGBEMI, SAN

LEGAL FRAMEWORK FOR ANIMAL RIGHTS….

This book traverses the gamut of animal rights and environmental issues which had always been in place, but were hitherto latent.

Just one lion brings 4 million naira to Kenya yearly.  This is a feat!  The book therefore expounds the economic benefits of preservation and conservation of animals and their environment and seeks to educate the citizens in the legal and moral implications of cruelty and mistreatment of non-human animals even in the laboratories!

Nigeria is a signatory to almost all the conventions on Animal Rights and Environmental protection; laws emanate from treaties of such conventions but enforcement of the laws is non-existent.  Arrays of these beneficial laws are included in these conventions to protect the animals and the environment for a symbiotic relationship with man and for the ultimate good of man.

The book is a trail blazer on the subject matter; it looks into the past, the present and what the future portends for the well-being of man in his dealings with the lower animals and the environment.

This is a legal treatise but it has been scripted so that everyone will find it useful. Apart from bringing out the tourist in you, it will be a veritable reference for societal beliefs on animals, Conventions on animal rights and environment, laws and ethics of animals’ related professions as well as means of identification of animals through English, local and scientific names.

Prince Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi, SAN
